Our Juror this year was Kass Morin Freeman

Juror’s Statement

The goal of the juror is to honor excellence.  At the highest level, the artist's personal vision is executed with good design, an innovative spirit, and great technical skill.

To my mind, a good composition is a must for the fair representation of any idea and is the foundation of a successful painting. After this, an innovative spirit, - a fresh eye on things- is always appealing to this juror, as is skill in handling the watercolor medium.

The pleasure of viewing so many admirable works in this exhibition was fraught with the great difficulty in having to choose from among so many for awards.  The large number of fine quality figures, portraits and abstracts made it especially challenging.  My job was to highlight the diverse expertise throughout the exhibition.

About the juror, Kass Morin Freeman  AWS, NWS

Although known to many as a landscape painter, Kass Morin Freeman’s abiding interest in metal sculpture often leads her to explore like shapes in the space of the two dimensional surface.

Freeman is an elected member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.  Other signature memberships include the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Northeast Watercolor Society and Philadelphia Water Color Society.

As an award winning artist, Freeman has won more than 150 major awards in national, international and regional art exhibitions; earning the Sylvan Grouse Guild Award Medal from the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and the Crest Medal from the Philadelphia Water Color Society for continued excellence in watercolor, the High Winds Medal and Hardie Gramatky Award from the American Watercolor Society, Gold and Keystone Award Medals from the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and Anna Hyatt Huntingdon Medal from the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club.

Her work has been featured in several books and art publications, including  Splash III, Splash 7, Make your Watercolors Look Professional, Best of Watercolor II, Watercolor for the Serious Beginner, Creative Expressions In Watercolor, and “International Showcase of Prize Winners” in International Artist issues 14 and 21).

Educated at the Moore College of Art and Design and Tyler School of Fine Art, Philadelphia, PA, Freeman has been involved for more than thirty years as teacher, juror and workshop instructor with many groups and art institutions.
