Pennsylvania Watercolor Society Portrait Workshop with
Jane Paul Angelhart
September 19 – 23, 2016
Fall usually brings fresh and exciting happenings to Pennsylvania and did so again September 19 – 23, 2016, with the arrival of Virginia artist Jane Paul Angelhart, who came to PWS country to teach a five day workshop on portrait painting. Jane came to us with many years of experience painting portraits and a real desire to pass along what she had learned to an eager group of fourteen attendees.
Monday came all too soon as we all settled in for the week of portrait instruction. Some of us, the author included, were probably a bit apprehensive as the morning began. Jane started us out by demonstrating the minute steps she uses to develop a good portrait. Each portrait demonstration was accompanied with a series of pre completed examples of the various progressive steps necessary to complete the portrait. As each stage was demonstrated, the class returned to their tables to work on that particular step. As the attendees worked, Jane provided individual attention where needed. As the portraits were near completion, Jane critiqued each one for the class.
The rest of the week more or less followed the same format with students attempting a new portrait each day. On several days there was time to work on several other portraits as well the dreaded self-portrait! Most of the attendees appeared pleased with their results. Additional minor topics covered were portrait photo shoots, attaching watercolors to hardboard backers with waxing, and marketing for artists. Everyone seemed to agree this was one of the best PWS workshops!
