International Juried Exhibition

The Pennsylvania Watercolor Society’s
42nd Annual International Juried Exhibition

Pennsylvania Watercolor Society respects the right of all artists to express their views or opinion through the creation of art. All works that appear herewith do so with the consent of the artist. The artworks expressed are solely those of the original artist whose views do not necessarily represent those of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, board, and/or any/all contributors to this site.

Welcome, everyone!

From the first physical show at Strawberry Square around 1979 in Harrisburg to today’s 2021 online juried show; we’ve come a long way!  Without the many volunteers, sponsors, donors, supporters, and active board members working to provide this juried show for you, it never would have happened. I am so proud of the commitment every person has made to produce this exhibition.

Twelve founding artists sought to create an association that would support and advance the watercolor medium for artists while promoting the beauty and appeal of watercolor to the public. I think those founding artists would be proud to see it continuing today, even in its online format.  The fantastic number of exhibiting artists from around Pennsylvania, the USA and the world make me excited to write this welcome to you.

PWS is a non-profit organization and has always been self-sustaining through yearly membership dues.  It is, this year without exception, an extraordinarily, diverse and beautiful exhibition brought to you by all those involved with the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society.  Thank you, everyone.

Linda R Young, President

Letter from Juried Show Chairperson

Congratulations to everyone selected for the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society 42nd Annual International Juried Exhibition. The exhibit is stunning. I hope you enjoy!

This year 353 artists from 37 states and 17 countries submitted a total of 635 entries for consideration.

We appreciate the time and careful consideration of our jury. Juror of Selection Lana Privitera had the difficult task of selecting 106 works for the exhibit. Juror of Awards Ted Nuttall had an equally difficult task in choosing 25 to receive awards.

Visit our website www.pawcs.com view the show in a virtual format.

Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making the exhibit possible, with special thanks to PWS President Linda R. Young, Membership Chair Anni Matsick, Members Online Show Chair Pam Wenger, Publicity Mona Frey, Webmaster Nick Mohler, and all those who made a financial contribution toward the catalog printing.

A very special thank you goes out to Awards Co-Chairs Helen Canfield and Gay Dunn, whose efforts brought the total value of our awards to $13,735.

Once again, congratulations to everyone in the show!

Best regards,
Jeannine Swartz
PWS Juried Show Chairperson

OUR JURORS

LANA PRIVITERA
JUROR OF SELECTION

"Once again the PWS will present a great Exhibit this Fall. It was quite an arduous job for me to select just 110 pieces from among the 635 original artworks entered this year. So many wonderful paintings to choose from!  We received a large number of sensational figure and portrait entries, as well as very creative abstracts, animal portraits, Still Lifes, architectural themes and some gorgeous landscapes and florals.

The overall quality of the work submitted was very high so, in the end, I hand-picked only the pieces that scored higher when I applied my usual three-point criteria: Those paintings have a unique or well-balanced design, are the most skillfully painted, and also tell a compelling story.

Many congratulations to all the artists whose extraordinary work will be in the show this year!"

Originally from Spain, Lana Privitera graduated in 1983 from the Fine Arts School Zaragoza, where she majored in Fashion Design and Art History. After working in Advertising for a few years, she moved to the USA in the early 1990s. After a long hiatus, she returned to painting watercolors again in 2014 - focusing this time in highly realistic still lifes. Since then, her large watercolors have been accepted and exhibited in numerous USA and International competitions, winning numerous top awards.

Mrs. Privitera is currently a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society (NWS), the Northeast Watercolor Society (NEWS), the Philadelphia Watercolor Society (PWCS) and the Central New York Watercolor Society (CNYWCS) among others. Mrs. Privitera has been an Art educator for over 15 years and is currently an Art Instructor at the Wallkill River school of Art in Montgomery, NY.

TED NUTTALL
JUROR OF AWARDS

A graduate of Colorado Institute of Art, Ted Nuttall is a figurative watercolorist whose painting expression was born out of his observation of people, his experience, and travels as an illustrator for the United States Air Force, and a 25-year career in graphic design. His work, as a designer, illustrator, and fine artist has won numerous national and regional awards.

Ted is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, and Watercolor West. His workshops and private classes have been enjoyed by many who have benefited from his personal and insightful instruction.

Watercolor Artist magazine’s August 2020 issue included an article written by Ted about his painting process, an extensive representation of his new work and featured his painting “Shine” on the cover. His painting entitled “Whispering Smith” was the cover piece for Northlight Books “Splash 12” which also included four of his other paintings.
